after i'd applied to schools, i learned about penn. my friend louisa had applied to all of the ivy league schools (her parents were on top of things, whereas mine really couldn't have cared less, even if they'd known about these schools) and penn was the only one she got into. when she first told me, i just didn't get it...i was like...i thought it was the equivalent of a UC, but in pennsylvania.
i'm sure i could've gotten into one of them. i got into stanford and was waitlisted at harvard and dartmouth (the only two ivies i knew of as ivies), but i was valedictorian and i had the best SAT scores in my class, so i imagine i could've at least gotten into penn (instead of louisa, who was ranked well below me). but, i just didn't even know about these schools. everything was paper back then (it wasn't that long ago, but it was long enough ago to make a difference) and you had to know about something in the first place to be able to look it up. i wish my high school had had better college counselors. they just pushed us all to go to cal states.
