Gah. I feel like I'm drowning. So many things are going on, and I'm at the center of all of it, sitting in the bottom of the boat screaming. Grad school is gigantic. Not physically, but conceptually. Responsibilityily.
Today was nuts. Lots of running around, realizing I should be reading papers about drosophila segmentation, and wanting nothing more than to lie down in the grass and take a nap. Tomorrow will be worse.
Schedule for today:
9:15-10:30 Genetics journal club and welcome breakfast
10:45-11:45 reading drosophila segmentation paper and trying like mad to understand the temperature selection step (WTF??)
12-12:45 Med Library tour, free travel mugs!
1-2:30 food, attempted reading of drosophila segmentation paper, frantically scheduling six interviews for the next three days
3-3:50 interview with possible rotation professor
4-5 really boring genetics seminar. now I know why I usually take notes. If I don't take notes, I don't pay attention.
currently: at home, updating lj in an attempt to reconnect with something familiar.
6:30-? Women in Science at Yale thing, wherein they give us free food and teach us how to be mentors to younger Women in Science at Yale. Sounds cool.
8-? Swing dancing party. Andrew and Shannon know how to dance, so hopefully I won't make too much a fool of myself, since they both said they'd help me out a bit. I want to take swing lessons this semester.
Schedule for tomorrow:
10:30-11:45 Med School Facility Tour (in which they show us where the microscopes and other fun science toys live)
1:00 meeting with a professor about rotations
1:45-3:00 Class. Intense class.
4-5 faculty talks, in which each person gets 5 minutes to convince us their research is interesting
4-5 on the other side of campus, a really cool seminar about microRNA
4:30-6 Dean's reception for new graduate students, free food.
7-something Discussion section for genetics, in which a write-up of the drosophila segmentation paper is due
Thursday:
8 am: meet possible rotation professor.
9:30-? possible rotation professor's lab meeting. leave early to make class on time.
10:30-noon other side of campus, first Cell bio seminar meeting. Have done homework for it beforehand.
noon, other side of campus, meet Faculty Friend for coffee, ask him about his research, possibly for rotation purposes
3:00, other side of campus, interview with another possible rotation guy
4-5 faculty talks.
8-10 free beer at the grad pub.
Friday:
10:45-noon: Genetics seminar thing, free food.
Noon, other side of campus: interview with possible rotation guy
2-4: other side of campus, open house, free food.
4-5 faculty talks.
Saturday:
10am-4pm: Yale Football 101, learn cheers, free food, attend game.
9:30pm-? Free beer at the grad pub.
This schedule does not take into account things like possibly climbing Thursday night, or picking up my stipend check on Friday, or the interviews I may try to squeeze in at the end of the week, or the fact that at some point I have to do things like homework, and eating and sleeping.
I'm so ridiculously happy. Freaked out, but happy.
