"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us." --F. Scott Fitzgerald

I think that's the end of the Fitzgerald quotes.... Weird how they all ended up right around the same time.

Anyway. Gatsby believed in hope, and the American dream, and all that good stuff. Hang on to your green lights. Things may not work out, but if you forget about the green light they definitely won't work out. Or something.

I need a car.

I've always thought Fitzgerald used Gatsby to critique the American dream, and so while Gatsby does believe in the green light and the American dream it symbolizes, Fitzgerald means to admonish us with Gatsby's character that becoming obsessed with such a dream as many Americans were starting to do in the 1920's (and still do now,) is dangerous. He does this with such literary devices as always keeping the lights far away, always distancing us from Gatsby's parties with cinematic descriptions of them, character by filtering him through a second narrator, and house. I read this book back in the days when I was an English major and I wrote an interesting paper arguing that all the characters in the novel serve as phenomenological constructs for Gatsby; this was a big part of my argument.

I'm not saying I want the American dream of money and fame and whatnot. I just think it's good to hold on to your dreams, and to hold out hope.

Who said I had extrinsic aspirations? Has anything I've ever said made you think I care about fame or fortune?

Is the American Dream about fame and fortune, or is it about opportunity, and doing better for yourself than you could have in whatever country you came from?

Sorry about being snappy earlier.
