On a gold strip:

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face... You must do the thing you think you cannot do." --Eleanor Roosevelt

I don't have any deep thoughts this morning, partly because I'm not afraid of anything right now (except maybe my thesis, but mostly I just hate that), and partly because I woke up at 6 for an 8 am class.

But I agree. I am a better person for the things I have forced myself to do in the face of fear. Jumping out of an airplane and skiing black diamonds may not be life-changing events, but they do build confidence and courage. Maybe strength as well.

In aforementioned 8 am photography class, I met a redhead named George. This quarter is starting out strangely.

I may not get into French, so I enrolled in a literature course that is going to study the concept of marriage in literature. It's a totally random class; I signed up because it was an open class taught MWF afternoons. Hopefully I'll get into French and then I can drop the lit class, but I do like the professor so far. This is definitely, definitely going to be an interesting quarter.

I shall now go to lab, for the first time since Monday, and try not to shoot myself in despair.

An interesting quote...

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stewart Mill
