oceantheorem: (Yeats' "Second Coming")
Okay, so when I was little, on April 9 I would start a countdown to my birthday. 30 days until May 9. I would line up things like little toy horses along the edge of the bathtub, and every night I would take one down, as I got another day closer to whichever birthday. I stopped doing the countdown thing years ago, or rather, I switched to writing down "20 days left!" at the top of every paper journal entry... but for some reason this year I decided I missed doing that physical countdown. Seeing things disapper day by day is kind of fun.

Also, my thesis is due the same week as my birthday, so I thought maybe watching the days tangibly diminish would motivate me to finish the damn thing.

And for some reason, I wanted to make one of those paper chain thingies out of strips of paper. You know, you take a strip of paper, tape it into a circle, and then link a bunch of them together to make a paper chain, and then you put it on a Christmas tree or something? I dunno where the urge to make one came from, but I guess it was my inner artist screaming out for some sort of release. So I decided to make one for the countdown to my birthday, as cheesy as it is, and put quotes on each of the links.

So I have this edition of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, and I spent a couple of hours with it last night, flipping through and jotting down all the quotes that caught my eye, trying not to think about them too much. I put them on paper strips of many different colors, stuck them together, and made a chain. So, starting today (yeah, with 34 days to go, I got an early start, I know it's not April 9 yet), every morning until my birthday I'll take one off and think about it, and that will by my Quote of the Day.

I thought maybe I'd try to post them all here, so that you guys could think about them too. Some of them are obscure, some of them will only mean something to me, some of them are dumb, but the idea is to encourage thought. I could use a little well-roundedness, and it seems to me that biochemistry majors don't often recognize famous quotes, sheltered as we are in our science textbooks. Perhaps it would do us all some good to recognize famous poetry, and be able to say who wrote what.

So I'll make a post after this one with today's quote, and a couple of thoughts about it, and well, we'll see how many days in a row I can remember to do this. If you think it's a dumb idea, that's fine, you can go away. If you like the idea, or you like a quote, comment and let me know. Ooooh, ooh, or if you have quotes of your own that you'd like to add, comment with those too. I won't put them on the chain now, but I still like quotes.

By the way, I still haven't enrolled in my last five credits, so if you're the praying type, could you ask your God to have someone drop from French 5 at UCSC?

"so... the other day i wrote a memo"
:P just kidding. but i have some quotes i like:
"Life isn't measured by the breaths that we take but by the moments that take our breath away" --unknown

"Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction" --Antoine de Saint-Exupery (the guy who wrote the little prince... i didn't realize that until i looked it up just now.)

and i totally made a paper chain in our senior year counting down to graduation. with like 10 extra loops at the end to count to my birthday :P

gah! i totally should have called you tonight. i'll try tomorrow!

love you sees...

Awesome!

I don't think I threw in any quotes by Antoine de Saint Exupery, but I did think about it. And I'm making an attempt to read that in French, since somehow in my high school French education I missed out on doing that. I think I was supposed to read it but never did or something....

Anyway.

Call me call me call me! I need chats with my seester!
