oceantheorem: (emperor's new groove feel the power)
Beware, dialup users, I come bearing pictures of Yale and New Haven. And of snow. Lots of snow.

Firstly, the view from my hotel window and a picture of the folder of information they gave us. Just because, you know, I spent a lot of time looking at these two things.

The rightmost tower, with the triangle pointy thing on top, is the Hall of Graduate Studies, where you can live if you feel like living in a dorm again. And the square fat tower in the middleish of the picture is (I think) Kline Biology Tower).

There are a lot of these windowless buildings around New Haven. Turns out they're the base of operations for the secret societies. This one is Book and Snake.

This, believe it or not, is the gym. Built to look like a cathedral on purpose.

Here's a detail of the arch above the main entrance to the gym. All the buildings in New Haven look like cathedrals. It's kind of cool, actually. We went to an Irish pub on Saturday night that looked like a cathedral, and I found out later that the builders had had pieces of Irish cathedrals shipped over so they could make the pub look more authentic.

This is the entrance to the Hall of Graduate Studies, and the backs of the heads of some of the other prospectives.

The courtyard of the Hall of Graduate Studies. I took this picture after walking through the entrance in the picture above.

The Gutenberg Bible, the first book ever printed with movable type, of which there are five copies left in the world, sits inside a glass case in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript library, which is next to the main library and is made of really thin marble with no windows, so sunlight shines through the marble and direct light never hits the books. Totally awesome place. Open to the public.

A random street near Old Campus. All the streets look like this--old and fairytaleish.

The view from my window soon after it started snowing. Sorry about all the water on the window; I couldn't get the damn thing dry enough to take a clear picture. (Compare this picture, taken Sunday morning, to the picture at the top, taken Friday afternoon.)

Yay! This is another secret society, Skull and Bones. It has the highest water bill in the entire city. No one is quite sure why, but if you think about it you'll realize that whatever they have going on in there requires constantly running water. If it's the highest water bill in the city, it is higher than the gym's water bill, and the gym has two large pools. Speculations?

Another random pretty building. Covered in snow.

Yale recycles! See how much snow had accumulated in just 12 hours!

And now, for my next trick, compare and contrast!

The courtyard and buildings in front of the library, first Saturday afternoon and then Sunday morning.

The main library, Sterling Library, Saturday afternoon and then Sunday morning.

And yes, we did have a snowball fight.

Other than that... all I can say is that I had an awesome time. The program looks amazing, the grad students look happy, and everyone there seemed to actually CARE about the fate of the grad students. Also, there are 230+ faculty and they only take in 70-80 grad students each year, so grad students are actually a hot commodity, and the whole environment is built to ensure that you leave as a scientist, and you actually learn something, instead of being used as a TA and a publication factory. It's very nurturing and comforting. I dunno. I haven't made any decisions yet, but I did buy a sweatshirt.

And they're offering me a LOT of money.

Words can't describe it.
But I love it with you.

Especially the A LOT of money part.

OOOOOO... pretty pictures... Thanks for including text though, (even if you didn't include alt-tags...) (I have to say that as a web-access consultant.)

*laugh* I'm glad you liked the pictures, Zach. Sorry about not including alt-tags. Honestly, I don't know what those are or how to include them....

How are you? Long time, no talk....

I know a chick that is a Yale grad student (psychology) and they offered her crap tons of money as well (I think like 24 K per year to teach). Lots of money = Sweet.
