oceantheorem: (May spring)
Today is my birthday.

I just spent $107 on yarn (most of it not for me) and $40 on knitting books (needed the pattern for the blanket the yarn is going to become...).

I stayed up allllll night Sunday night writing that stupid paper, and still haven't caught up on sleep. And I have to go in early to lab today and stay late.

I think this is my first "adult" birthday; I have to work a long day in lab and can't celebrate really at all until next week. And... I dunno. The 12-year-old in me really wishes she could take the day off to sleep in and have people fawn over her.

I'm going to bed now.

HEY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I knew it was your birthday but I forgot. I'm a bad person.

I wish you could sleep in and be fawned over, too! I hope you have an awesome time celebrating next week. I haven't had an "adult" birthday yet, fortunately.

Just for today, it will be my default icon. :-P

Yarn?

Ooh, ooh, what kind of yarn? What kind of blanket? I love living vicariously through other people buying yarn, even if it's not for themselves!

Hehe. I got Crystal Palace Cotton Flamme in a bunch of different colors, all from LittleKnits.com. I love that site... :-) I got a bag each of Santa Fe, Cornflower, Celery, and Natural, plus a few skeins each of Daisies in Bloom and English Rose.

The blanket is going to be either some sort of variant on http://community.livejournal.com/knitting/8491967.html#cutid1 (I bought the book the person used; it was only $7 on Amazon, which of course led directly to me spending $33 more on things I hadn't planned on getting...), or the Modern Log Cabin blanket from Mason-Dixong Knitting (which, incidentally, is one of the other books I ordered, even though I hadn't planned on it).

I want the blanket to be something I can finish by July 6, and something she and her husband will both cherish for a couple decades. I dunno if cotton is the right material or if these are the right patterns, but we'll see what we get. :-)

I'm so excited!

Ha - I bought Mason-Dixon for the same reason, the cool blankets. My boyfriend and I are co-knitting a blanket for one of his coworkers, who is also due the first week of July. We were thinking of something Log Cabin-ish but ended up doing simple garter stripes, 2 or 4 rows each in about 10 different colors. It looks great but the end-weaving-in is going to suck. We're thinking of leaving it as fringe, on one side...not sure if that would look weird, but I guess we could always add it to the other side after we're done. Better than weaving in ends...

Kara,
Sorry I missed your birthday. As you know, I was indisposed. Most unfortunate on my end. Anyway, I finished sending you those songs today. You should have all 18 now. Some of them were sent from Gtalk (as you probably remember) and the rest I sent via email over these couple of days. I'm only reminding you because I want you to listen to the thing as an album because it is built to be enjoyed like that (unlike most greatest hits albums).

R.E.M is one of the most influential bands out of the 80's (they inspired Pearl Jam and a variety of other acts. In fact, their sound can be felt in offshoot bands like Death Cab that employ similar styles). I only mention that because the greatest hits record that I sent you really captures a lot of their seminal work, but there is a lot more there if you are interested. I really hope you enjoy the record and will get something out of it...even if it doesn't necessarily make high rotation or become a staple of your collection. I have kind of given up always being able to bat 1,000 on that one. He he.

I'm still figuring out what else I'm going to do. Perhaps I will just surprise you one day and just call it a birthday present. He he.

Anyway...Happy Birthday (a bit belated perhaps...but happy in spirit and wishes).
