Every once in a while something happens that evokes an overhwhelmingly powerful reaction from me. Abortion has always been one of those things; I believe it is absolutely VITAL that this sort of thing be legal in the United States, not as a form of birth control for lazy and irresponsible women, but for the kinds of cases that break your heart to read about--cases where something is horribly wrong with the pregnancy, and either the child can't possibly lead any semblance of a normal life, or cases where the mother is in imminent danger of death if the pregnancy isn't terminated.

Since a doctor who performed late-term abortions was shot--IN CHURCH--yesterday, a blog I frequently read posted a link to this article about why late-term abortions are necessary (be warned that that article might make you cry).  It was written five years ago, but it demonstrates why "pro-choice" advocates won't give up.

I think everyone would like to see the numbers of abortions in the US decrease, and I can't think of any sane person who would be against educating women about their options and making birth control more readily available to the general population.  But banning abortions and removing the choice to terminate a pregnancy is NOT the way to reduce these numbers.  All it will do is drive the practice underground and make it less safe, ultimately causing more deaths, which is exactly what "pro-life" advocates are supposed to be trying to prevent.
