oceantheorem: (was lost now I live here)

Ugh.

Three weeks of hard research and I have nothing to show for it.

Okay, well, I can show that manganese doesn't have an effect on protein carbonyls.

And I can show that you can't put TCA into a sample you're going to run a Bradford on, because that is just dumb.

And I can show that... all thesis and no play makes Kara very, very weary.

Yale in a week and a half....

I'm sending out preliminary graduation invitations. If you want to come, you really really REALLY need to make hotel reservations now, or you and all my relatives will be sleeping on top of each other in my living room, and frankly that just doesn't sound like fun.

Thank God!

When you called and said you wanted to send me a card, I thought it was because you were getting married, and I got that depressed feeling because I thought "now *every* one I know is getting married. Thank God you're only graduating... (You're not getting married too are you? I would be happy for you if you were, just depressed too...) But I'm happy for you that you're graduating!

*LAUGH* No, I'm not getting married. Not anytime soon. I promise. Nor am I getting pregnant. I have too much stuff ahead of me for me to start a family now!

No need to worry. I'm staying unmarried and flinging myself full speed ahead into graduate school.

I know what you mean about *everyone* getting married, though. Seriously.

Do you think you might be able to come to my graduation? June 18.

i'm really eager to see how you like Yale. i wish i'd been able to visit, but i'd just started a new job and they had no idea i was applying to grad school - there's no way i could have gotten time off. i *did* see it from afar, once. i was on a bus from new york to providence and i saw the tops of some nice looking buildings!!

i hope you go there. and i can go there vicariously!

I'll take lots of notes, I promise. I'll try to take pictures, but I'm notoriously bad about taking my camera with me and then not taking a single picture.

I've never been to the east coast, so I'm excited!

Any advice for the interview?

i've only been once. and it was seriously tainted by the stupid ex-boyfriend that i went with (of course, he wasn't an ex at the time).

since you're already in, it would be good for you to ask about course and work requirements, where most students live, and practical matters like that. of course, act interested in all that's going on there...

i would also look into job placement for recent grads, but this might be something you can find on their website. of course, meet with your advisor and get a feel for their style. some are way more involved than others, and it depends on your style as a student/advisee. my advisor is very involved (albeit a bit scatterbrained) and i like that, since it keeps me on track. my MA advisor was more go-with-the-flow and it took me an extra year to finish. not that it's entirely his fault, but i could've used some pressure, you know?

Awesome. *scribbles notes*

Ugh... this whole grad thing takes so much effort. I kind of just want to move to Hawaii and spend the rest of my life lying in a hammock drinking pina coladas, you know?

Thanks for the advice though.

i am sure you'll do fine. it really is a time when *they* will be trying to impress *you*.

in my experience, getting into grad school is the easiest part. choosing a school once you're in is the hardest. and jumping through all of the hoops once you've actually begun grad school is somewhere in-between!

Yeah--that's right!

You mock me because I'm here and it's my home...but you know how it goes...

Much love to you--from Hawaii. Though no pina coladas yet....
*hugs and loves to you--my wonderful kickass goon*
