I applied for a job with the title "Freelance academic writer" (http://detroit.craigslist.org/wri/1088900328.html sounds legit, right?) and got an email back telling me to go to some website, enter a special applicant ID number (which they provided), then fill out the following forms and THEN I'd be able to upload my resume (which I'd already sent them...). So I go to the website, type in said applicant ID number and whatnot, hit submit...

and it takes me to a freakin ad. "Fill out this survey to win a $1,000 gift certificate to Walmart!" and I then have to go through 3 pages of personal info for the Walmart thing, before it takes me to ANOTHER page forcing me to give my address to two MORE random places and fill out THEIR surveys, and I still haven't seen anything about uploading a resume or applying for said job, or anything at all really about the company I'm trying to apply to...

Screw you guys. I am not completing your ridiculous gauntlet of email thievery and trickery just so I can apply to your stupid job. I don't want your job if it means I have to work for a company that forces its APPLICANTS to sign up for stupid internet shit.

I am so angry right now.

THIS is why I still haven't found a second job. Half the jobs that are actually out there are just fucking scams.

I. KNOW. I've been doing the same thing and have just decided to freaking give up. Nothing is legit apparently. ARGH.

There IS a freelance position that is usually available on the Provo Craigslist, it's for Heritage Inc or something like that, but I don't know if you have to be able to meet at their location every once in a while or anything.

Oooh. Thanks for the lead; I'll look into that.

Ridiculous scams! So frustrating.

They just had some kind of segment on the local news about how so many jobs now are scams, including scams that actually ask you to pay for applying for a job and then clean out your bank account/credit card. And some people fall for those because they are so desperate.
So yeah, good luck with job search, I hope you find something decent without selling your soul to Walmart.

It really is getting bad. The number of listings on Craiglist (and every other job site ever) just keep decreasing. And as you said, the number of jobs that are scams is going up. God. *rails against stupid economy*

I think for my second crappy part-time job I'm gonna start looking at things like local bookstores and yarn shops instead of trying to get legit science writing/editing work. Sigh.

I had a similarly horible experience with Craigslist... I never should have come back to the U.S. ... fucking scams... I have about three half-jobs, translating, interpreting, playing gigs, but it's still not enough to move out.

Ugh, it is so frustrating. You'd think that with credentials like yours (and mine) people would be lining up with work for us to do.

Mustn't... be... cynical... must... not use... the phrase... "capitalist lie"! must stay positive! must stay positive at all costs! :-)
